ABOUT THE MINISTRY
A Look at The Potter's Christian Life Center
The Potter's Christian Life Center began with Pastor Jim and Jan Petty as a pioneer work, receiving its charter on February 28, 1989. Pastor Jim led the congregation until August 2, 1993 when Greg Formey became pastor, sent out to minister by Overcoming By Faith Ministries (www.overcomingbyfaith.org) of Savannah, Georgia. At that time there were 23 members here in Columbia, including Pastor Greg and his family. We have grown to over 370 wonderful members to date.
On May 31, 2007, we acquired our third church facility, located at 2700 Haymarket Road in Columbia. This is a 4-acre property with a pre-existing sanctuary, an administrative wing, and a separate multi-purpose building.
Our congregation is interdenominational in philosophy, choosing to rejoice with all who cherish Jesus Christ as Messiah, Savior, Lord of the Church. We believe that He, as God Almighty, came to earth fully human, and died a substitutionary death for us, then rose from the dead on the third day!
In this regard, we were among the first partners in a cooperative fellowship of churches of several denominational backgrounds called “Mission Columbia,” which seeks to reach every man, woman, and child in the Columbia and Lexington metropolitan area with a clear explanation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and then to encourage them to unite with solid, balanced, loving local churches. We believe in prayer, praise, the practical and forthright exposition of God's Word, and the establishing of a Christian view of the world. Our commitment is to not give in to extremes of fanaticism on the one hand, nor cold legalism on the other.
The Potter's Christian Life Center believes in reaching out to the Columbia metro area and beyond by radio with a daily segment at 5:50 AM called 'Praying in the Word', as well as a weekly program on Sundays at 1:45 PM, called 'The Potter's House.' Both are broadcasted on WFMV 95.3 FM. We also recently launched a television program called “Life With The Potter,” seen each Sunday morning at 9:00 AM on the CW Network (WZRB, Channel 47 or Time Warner Cable 13).
The vision for our church is derived from Jeremiah 18:1-6, 'This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: 'Go down to the potter's house, and there I will give you my message.' So I went down to the potter's house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him. Then the word of the LORD came to me:
'O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does?' declares the LORD. 'Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.' (NIV)
